Date: 27 November 2011
Death toll rises to 4 with 24 missing after a bridge under construction collapses in Indonesia.

One more body found on Sunday after the collapse of Mahakam bridge in Indonesia’s Borneo island, taking the death toll to four, rescue workers said.

They said 24 people were still missing and the hunt for survivors was still on.

“I dove into the river, between 40-50 meters, I only found the steel frame of the bridge,” rescue worker Joni said.

The 700-metre suspended bridge collapsed at 4.20 p.m. (0820 GMT) on Saturday (November 26) when labourers were conducting repairs, sending motorcycles and cars crashing into the Mahakam river below.

More than 15 people were still being treated at Parekesit hospital in Tenggarong, capital of Kutai Kertanegara district. According to reports most of the injured were suffering from head wounds and broken limbs

Relatives of missing people crowded at the rescue operation post set up near the bridge seeking news of their loved ones.

The bridge, which was built to resemble the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, links the towns of Tenggarong and Samarinda in East Kalimantan province.
