International news Earthquakes hit El Salvador damaging homes: Date 27 ,November 2011
Thousands of residents in impoverished El Salvador fear the worst as earthquakes rattle the nation.
More than 700 slight to moderate earthquakes hit an area in eastern El Salvador in recent days, damaging dozens of homes but hurting no one.
The brief quakes, which started Thursday and ranged from 1.8 to 4.6 in magnitude, have occurred in the municipality of El Carmen, some 163 km (101 miles) east of the capital of San Salvador, the country’s National Territory agency reported.
Civil protection authorities told local media that some 80 homes were damaged by the tremors, known as an earthquake swarm.
“The fear that this community feels is that that hill can explode at any moment. There have been many earthquakes here, for example the one in 2001, which was perhaps stronger and lasted longer, but the one today significantly damaged many houses, there are some that are completely wrecked. But all have been damaged,” said one resident.
Authorities sent troops into some areas; however, many communities are still awaiting state assistance.
“What the people need here is sheets, a mattress and food. This is what we need from people who come here to help. Because children are sleeping on the ground, I ve just bought my mattress because I have a 5-year-old son and it hurts me that he is on the ground with a sheet,” said another local.
Authorities have not ordered evacuations yet, many residents of El Carmen chose to sleep in the open, and the army was handing out tents.
